Fiber proof testers are designed to use a set load to a fusion-spliced optical fiber in order to test the strength of the spliced fiber. Our Secondary Coating Line can be purchased in both linear and rotary designs, for proof and tension testing. Fiber proof testers are available for single mode, multimode, and polarization-maintaining fibers. Select from dedicated, standalone systems or multipurpose designs which are also capable of stripping, cleaning, cleaving, splicing, and/or recoating.
Fiber Recoaters with Proof Testers offer easy, integrated answers to recoat and test fusion-spliced fibers. The fiber recoating process restores the buffer coating to some stripped fiber, offering more flexibility compared to a heat-shrink protection sleeve, enabling it to be handled and coiled without damaging the fusion-spliced section. The integrated linear or rotary proof tester allows users to immediately test a recoated fiber having a pre-determined load and determine the long term longevity of the fiber. Because of their ability to restore a fusion-spliced fiber to near original condition, these systems are best for applications like undersea optical fiber cables, submarine communication cabling, fiber lasers, or Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) lasers.
The process starts with the fusion-spliced portion of fiber being placed in the center of the mold assembly (see image off to the right). Once placed in position, inserts within the fiber blocks secure the spliced fiber in place. Recoat material is pumped into the cavity then UV-cured. The recoated fiber may then be tested by pulling into it up to a pre-determined load.
Recoater and Mold Assembly Options
Recoaters are available with either a computerized or manual mold assembly. The FTTH Cable Production Line features pneumatic control over the mold plates and is optimized for high-volume manufacturing applications. Manual mold assemblies, on the other hand, use hinged mold plates that provide more flexibility and are ideal for low-volume manufacturing or R&D applications. An automatic or manual volumetric dispensing pump and injection system is employed to inject the recoat material in to the mold cavity.
The PTR208 automatic recoater comes standard using a mold assembly for Ø430 µm coated fibers; For the manual recoaters (Item #s PTR206, PTR206B, PTR307, and PTR307B), the mold assembly comes separately so that customers can choose the right mold coating diameter for his or her application. Custom mold coating sizes can be found up to Ø900 µm. Pre-setting up the mold assembly at the factory is also available. Contact Tech Support for more information on custom molds or factory assembly.
We provide both high-index (Item # AB950200) and low-index (Item # PC373) recoat materials to be used in these recoaters. Recoaters with manual injection pumps (Item #s PTR206B and PTR307B) are compatible with both varieties of recoat material; other recoaters are suitable for our prime-index material only. Our manual recoaters with the automatic injection system (Item #s PTR206 and PTR307) may be customized to work with the low- and-index recoat material; please contact Tech Support for more information.
Proof Tester Options
The PTR206, PTR206B, and PTR208 Fiber Recoaters come with an integrated linear proof tester, which takes the fiber up to and including predetermined load (20 N) and after that releases it. The linear proof tester uses the same fiber holding blocks as the recoater and therefore the fiber will not have to be moved just before testing. The PTR307 and PTR307B Fiber Recoaters have Secondary Coating Line, which may perform both proof and tension tests (?89 N). One group of proof test grips is included; replacement proof test grips are available below in packs of 10. Each testing process is fully programmable via the included handset or tablet controller, allowing an individual to choose parameters like the load, the pace at fseejm the stress is applied, as well as the hold time.
Inserts for Fiber Holding Blocks
In addition to the above, we provide you with a number of inserts for use inside the fiber holding blocks of the recoaters so that you can support a wide range of fiber coating diameters. For recoaters having a rotary proof tester, the inserts are appropriate for fiber coating diameters in a vary from 125 µm to 900 µm. For recoaters having a linear proof tester, the inserts cover a range for fiber coatings from Ø250 µm to Ø900 µm.
